What Is a Google Map Pack?
The Google Map Pack is the block of three local business listings — complete with a map, star ratings, and a “Directions” button — that Google shows above the standard organic results for local searches like “plumber Gravesend” or “coffee shop near me.”

Not the “10 blue links” below — the three results with the map above them. For most local service businesses, it’s the single most valuable piece of real estate on the results page: it sits above the organic listings, it’s visually dominant, and a meaningful share of searchers never scroll past it.
Map Pack vs. Organic Results — Two Separate Systems
This is the part most business owners miss: Map Pack ranking and standard organic ranking are driven by overlapping but distinct signals. A business can rank first in the Map Pack for “electrician Gravesend” while barely appearing in the organic results for the same term underneath it — or the reverse. Treating them as one combined effort, rather than two systems that both need deliberate attention, is one of the most common reasons local visibility stalls even when a business is “doing SEO.”
What Actually Determines Map Pack Ranking
Google names three ranking factors directly: proximity (how close the searcher is to the business), relevance (how well the listing matches what was searched), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed the business is, both on Google and across the web). Proximity is largely outside a business’s control on any given search, which is exactly why relevance and prominence — category selection, service-area accuracy, review volume, review response rate, citation consistency — are where the actual optimization work happens.
How to Check Where You Stand
Search your core service term plus your town, from an incognito window, and look specifically at the Map Pack block above the organic results. Note your position (or absence), and note which competitors appear instead. Do this for two or three of your highest-value service terms, not just your business name — ranking for your own name isn’t the same signal as ranking for what a stranger would actually search.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not quite — your Google Business Profile is the listing itself (the data you control: hours, categories, photos, posts). The Map Pack is the search results feature that listing competes to appear in. A well-optimized profile is necessary to rank in the Map Pack, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable.
Because they’re separate ranking systems drawing on different signal weightings. Strong prominence and category relevance can win the Map Pack without a website that’s independently strong for organic search, and vice versa.
The three-result format is broadly consistent, but mobile search — where most local, on-the-go queries happen — tends to show the Map Pack even more prominently, often before any organic result is visible without scrolling.
