Why Isn’t My Google Ads Campaign Converting?

If you’ve been asking why isn’t my Google Ads converting, here’s the most common cause — and what else to check — explained plainly.

01Clicks Without Conversions

Paying for clicks that don’t turn into enquiries is the most common Google Ads complaint we hear — and it’s almost always one of these five, checkable in your own account.

In Order of How Often We Actually Find Each One

Your Quality Score Is Dragging Down Every Click

Quality Score affects both your cost per click and how often your ads show at all. A low score across your account usually means ad relevance, landing page experience, or expected click-through rate is weak — and it compounds: a poor score makes every click more expensive at the same time as it makes every click less likely to convert.

How to check it: In Google Ads, add the Quality Score column to your Keywords view. Anything below 5 out of 10 on your main terms is worth investigating before you spend more.

You’re Missing Negative Keywords

Broad or phrase match keywords without a negative keyword list will show your ads for searches that are close to your target term but wrong for your business — costing you clicks that were never going to convert.

How to check it: Open the Search Terms report and read the actual queries triggering your ads. Anything clearly irrelevant to what you offer should go straight onto your negative list.

Your Landing Page Doesn’t Match the Ad

If your ad promises one specific thing and the landing page is a general homepage or a different offer, visitors bounce — even genuinely interested ones, because the page doesn’t confirm they’re in the right place.

How to check it: Click your own ad and time how long it takes to find the exact thing the ad promised on the page it lands on. If it’s not immediate, that mismatch is costing you conversions.

Conversion Tracking Isn’t Set Up Correctly

A campaign that looks like it’s not converting may actually be converting fine — just not measuring it. Broken tracking is one of the most common and most invisible causes, because everything else about the campaign can look completely normal.

How to check it: Submit a real test enquiry through your own site and confirm it registers as a conversion in Google Ads within 24 hours. If it doesn’t, your reported numbers are wrong, not your campaign.

Broad Match Is Wasting Budget on the Wrong Searches

Broad match can work well when managed tightly, but left unmanaged it spends budget on searches only loosely related to your keywords — spreading your budget across far more searches than your negative list alone can clean up.

How to check it: Filter your Search Terms report by match type. If broad match terms show a much lower conversion rate than exact or phrase match, that’s where budget is leaking.

02Do It Yourself

How to Check Your Quality Score and Search Terms Report

Two reports inside your own Google Ads account cover most of what’s above. The Keywords view with the Quality Score column added shows you where relevance is weak. The Search Terms report, filtered by match type and sorted by spend, shows you exactly which queries are burning budget without converting. Ten minutes in both is usually enough to confirm or rule out three of the five causes.

03Next Steps

When PPC Genuinely Isn’t the Right Channel Yet

If your Quality Score is consistently low and your landing page and tracking are both confirmed correct, the honest answer can sometimes be that PPC needs your on-page fundamentals sorted first — see What Is Quality Score in Google Ads? The metric that decides your cost-per-click → why your website might not be converting before assuming the ads themselves are the problem. Our Google Ads service is built around fixing this properly, not just spending more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s a good Quality Score, realistically?+

7 or above on your main terms is strong. 5–6 is workable but worth improving. Below 5 usually means real relevance or landing page issues that are actively costing you money on every click.

How much wasted spend is “normal” before I should worry?+

Some wasted spend is normal in any account. If your Search Terms report shows more than 15–20% of spend going to clearly irrelevant queries, that’s worth acting on rather than accepting.

Should I pause my campaign while I fix conversion tracking?+

Not necessarily — you can usually fix tracking without pausing, and pausing resets some of the account’s learned data. Fix tracking first, then reassess performance with accurate numbers.

Is PPC still worth it if my Quality Score is low?+

Often yes, once the underlying cause is fixed — a low score is usually a symptom of a fixable issue (relevance, landing page), not a sign the channel itself is wrong for your business.
